Barbara Maier Dead – Obituary
Barbara Maier Gustern, 87, a renowned Broadway singing coach died in hospital after suffering significant brain damage after being knocked down by a stranger in New York City.
She was seriously injured last Thursday evening when she was assaulted from behind without provocation while strolling near her Chelsea residence, causing her head to strike the sidewalk.
Gustern was also a former wellknown vocal coach whose students included Blondie singer Debbie Harry, was walking down West 28th Street at 8 p.m. Thursday when she was shoved to the ground by an unnamed woman.
Her assailant, a redheaded man who has yet to be apprehended, then fled.
Blondie frontwoman Debbie Harry, drag artist and playwright Taylor Mac, feminist punk vocalist Kathleen Hanna, and cast members in the 2019 Broadway production of Oklahoma! were among others who have studied with Barbara Maier Gustern, the classically educated singer.
